Tamika has begun to stir. Naomi was content to leave her to sleep, but now that the rush to get out of the car and into the SUV is over, she wakes.

“What’s happening?” she says, her voice sleepy.

“It’s all right, honey,” Naomi says, stroking the side of her face. “We just need to go somewhere else is all. You can go back to sleep if you want to.”

Tamika doesn’t go back to sleep. She straightens up in her seat and looks around.

Naomi watches both of her children. They look all right, just a little confused. Naomi feels the same way. She looks out the window. They’re on the outskirts of Shreveport. She leans forward to speak to Bill and Ben. “How long will it take us to get where we’re going?”

Bill turns in the passenger seat. “Not too long,” he says. “We’re about twenty minutes out.”

Naomi hasn’t kept track of the time, but she thinks they’ve been driving for a half hour already. They’re putting a lot of distance between themselves and the safe house they’ve left behind.

“We’re actually making pretty good time,” Bill says. “With it being so late, there’s hardly anyone else on the road.”

“Bill, look at this,” Ben says, getting his partner’s attention.

Bill turns. Intrigued, Naomi leans to the side so she can see between them and out the windshield. There’s nothing around them. No buildings. They stop next to a junction that leads to some factories further down the road in that direction. Directly down the road from where they’ve stopped, lighting up the sky, she can see blue-and-red lights. Cop cars. Ben slows the car. They’re close enough now that Naomi can see what the cops are doing. They’ve closed the road. They’ve set a blockade across both lanes. There are two cruisers behind the blockade, and four cops stand around it. One of them is waving, motioning for the car to come closer and be checked.

Ben stops the car. Bill looks at him. Ben’s shaking his head. “I don’t like this,” he says.

“What’s the problem?” Bill says.

“It feels off,” Ben says. “We’re dealing with Hondurans, right? I spent some time in Honduras. Fake cop stops are a specialty down there. And I don’t know, this just feels like too much of a coincidence to me. We’re told we need to leave the house, then on the road we’re taking to the new safe house, there’s a blockade? This doesn’t sit right.”

“Then get us out of here,” Bill says.

Ben reaches down to put the car in reverse. As he does so, Naomi spots movement out of the corner of her eye, to their right, coming from the junction they’ve stopped beside. She turns to it. A dark shape is descending upon them. It’s a car. Its headlights are off. The next thing she knows, it smashes into the side of the SUV, hitting the passenger side where Bill sits. It hits them hard. The children scream. Naomi, dazed, grabs at them, pulls them closer to her so she can cover them with her body.
